In Chinese medicine, the quality of sleep is linked to the relationship between Yang (spirit) and Yin (the body). Yin represents the warm and cozy bed and Yang takes pleasure relaxing in it.
Everyday hassles and emotions, such as fear, joy, sadness, constant thought or anger will affect the Yang (spirit), while an upset stomach, problem with the blood or energy from the gallbladder will disturb the Yin (body). If one of these two elements is disrupted, harmony can not be established between the body and the mind. This will result in poor sleep quality or in insomnia.
At first, the acupuncturist needs to determine which organ (heart, stomach, gallbladder, kidney, spleen / pancreas) is the source of the energy imbalance. Using the energy grid, or in other words the meridians (pathways through which the energy of our organs flow), it is possible to open, close or connect to certain meridians and restore proper energy flow and rebalance the organs which are responsible for the insomnia.
