Massage therapy

An explanation of the technique and its benefits

Not all types of massage are for relaxation. There are certain types of massages that help you recover and loosen adhesions that may be the source of pain or fatigue.

This is the case of the deep tissue massage, better known by its English name of “deep tissue massage”. It is a type of massage that targets the deeper structures and works on the adhesions that are created by lesions that, when healing, will have left scars. These scars do not allow full movement of the muscle tissue. So by working on these, your therapist will be able to undo them and return to a healthier tissue that is free of these movements.

Who takes this type of massage? Many athletes use this approach to activate recovery. The process of training is to create an adaptation of the body to a new level of stress. There is therefore a need for adhesion, as the tissues must repair themselves under the influence of an ever-increasing workload. Some workers may also have workloads that put stress on the body. Ironically, we find here the two extremes: those who work in a very physical way and those who spend much of their time immobile.

From a physiological point of view, both create stress on the body. The first is for athletes, and the second is more about maintaining a position for a very long period of time (muscular endurance), such as, for example, office work.

If you come in for a deep tissue massage, what should you expect? It is a very physical massage and can sometimes be painful. Your therapist will use hands, fingers and elbows to reach deeper into the tissue. Friction work will be done on these adhesions to remove them and often the therapist will place the body at an angle to gain access to certain areas. This is not a hot stone or Swedish massage! It is an energetic and vigorous massage that aims at recovery.

Do you work out or does your job put stress on your body? Make an appointment with our massage therapist and try this type of massage. Your recovery will be favoured. Also, if your work posture is affecting your back health, we have options for you. We offer chairs that promote a more dynamic posture, exercises that will help you have a healthier back, and we can help you have more appropriate ergonomics.
