Why is it important?

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle separating the lungs and heart from the belly.

Why is it important?

  • Its primary purpose is to get air into the lungs by increasing the volume of the rib cage and to excrete metabolic waste.
  • Secondly, it is important to relieve your lower back pain. Indeed, a tension of this muscle which attaches to the vertebrae in the lower back leads to lumbar pain.
  • This muscle then attaches to the last six ribs and can cause pain between or under the shoulder blades if it lacks mobility as well as some shoulder pain.
  • Neck pain is relieved by treating the diaphragm because there is a link between the diaphragm and the neck via the fascia (envelopes) of the thorax.
  • It has a role to facilitate digestion. In addition, good diaphragm mobility is important to avoid reflux and hiatal hernias. This muscle allows the body to feed itself with oxygen and nutrients and then eliminate metabolic waste. An adequate mobility of the diaphragm allows this cycle of inspiration and expiration in order to optimize the functioning of the human body, such as back pain, neck pain or certain difficulties in digestion.
